Brief

Let two players alternate moves on an 8×8 board, starting from the standard position

Move each kind of piece according to its own rules, including captures

Reject any move that would leave the mover's own king in check

Detect check, checkmate and stalemate after every move

Support castling, en passant and pawn promotion

Keep a history of moves and allow the last move to be undone

Two local players; no computer opponent and no game clock
Draws by repetition, the fifty-move rule and agreement are out of scope
Correctness matters more than speed, but checking legality should not copy the whole board for every candidate move
